Disappearing Nine-Patch

This is a fun way to learn about quilt making! We will be using basic piecing skills and simple squares to make a stunning one-day quilt top. Color play, sub-cutting, and other great beginner skills will bring your piecing to the next level!

I have included details to help you choose the look of your completed top. Please download these .pdf files to get started... who doesn't love a coloring sheet??

If you're brand new to quilt making, fear not. These are just visual aids to help you see what the completed top will look like. They are not necessary, they're just fun. ;)

Please choose a color option and bring the following fabrics:

Option 1: Layer Cake Friendly
Not a huge fan of cutting? Keep the cutting work-load low with this color option. For best results, make sure the color you choose as the background has contrast with your Layer Cake and does not blend in.
  • (1) Layer Cake or (42) Precut 10" squares
  • 2.25 yd Background
Option 2: FQ Bundle Friendly
Do you love the chaotic pile of color loaded into fat quarter bundles? Let's skip the background and dive in to a saturated quilt top! My sample was made from the Ruby Star Smol fq bundle. Note that I used 9" squares to accommodate the fq size.
  • (18) fat quarters
Option 3: Tri-Color
Want a little more control? Choosing this yardage option gives you ultimate control and cutting practice-- and maybe you'll find a perfect fabric in your stash to use! I've included fabric suggestions below.
  • 2.25 yd Background (low volume, subtle, nearly solid)
  • 2.25 yd Focus Print (larger print, colorful, movement, themed)
  • 5/8 yd Accent (a bright friend to the focus print, attitude, bolder, off-color)

Note: All fabrics should be 100% quilting cotton.

Please bring the following supplies:
  • sewing machine and accessories, power cord, foot control, etc
  • 1/4" foot, all-purpose foot
  • coordinating thread for piecing (50wt cotton preferred, all-purpose is okay)
  • 1-2 filled bobbins
  • quilting pins & pincushion
  • rotary cutter & mat
  • quilt ruler (I recommend 6"x24" for cutting strips and squaring up, but bring what you have!)
  • scissors or snips
  • *optional: small ironing board and travel iron. Not required!*
