Introduction to Free Motion Quilting and Ruler Work

Check you calendar, class fees are not refundable !!!

Learn how to finish your quilts on your domestic sewing machine.  We will be learning several beginner friendly free motion quilting designs as well as how to use a straight ruler work quilting ruler.  I have been finishing my own quilts from the very beginning of my quilting journey 20 years ago.  I was too naive to realize it was supposed to be hard..!  Also, I didn't expect perfection, which is good because it takes practice.  It ended up being my favorite part of the quilting process.  If you always wanted to finish your own quilts or if you would like to quilt your own table runners, bags and baby quilts, come join us!

***There are high and low shank machines.  It depends on which one you have as to the size of ruler you can use.  If you are not sure which one you have, call the shop and ask for Tonya.  I can help you determine which one your machine will take.***
You will need:

  • Sewing Machine
Any machine can free motion quilt, however bigger does make it easier, so if you usually bring a small machine to classes, you may want to bring the Big Mama to this one! We are here to help you get it out of your vehicle if needed.
  • Free motion quilting foot (sometimes called "darning foot")
  • Ruler work foot for your model
  • Extension table
  • Supreme Slider or similar silicon mat (for maximum glide!)
  • Quilting gloves like Machingers for extra grip
  • Straight quilting ruler (we have some available) *Choose a size that is comfortable for your hands
  • Marking pen like purple air-erasable or blue water soluble (Frixion is okay too)
  • Regular ruler for marking and planning designs
  • 4 - 5 quilt sandwiches (depending on how much you would like to practice)
A solid fabric is best for the top of your quilt sandwich so you can see your stitches.  Don't bring anything special to you, we are learning, not finishing something fancy.  If you have any questions ask! I will make one to have at the shop so you can see what I mean.  Something the size of a fat quarter is perfect.
  • Thread
You can use whatever you like, I prefer 50 wt., but 40 wt. is fine as well.  I have even used embroidery thread-- you just want it to be high quality thread.  A lighter color will look nicer, something just dark enough to show a little bit on your top fabric.  Again, if you need help, please come into the shop and we can help you.
  • Several filled bobbins with the same thread you will be using on top.
  • Scissors for thread snipping.
  • Curved Quilting pins
*Not necessary on such a small quilt sandwich, but a few here and there are helpful at keeping everything together!
  • Sketch Book (helpful for doodling ideas and practicing your designs)  Also, nice to have a place to look back at previous ideas.
  • Pencil
